Alexandre Charliat established ESIGELEC in 1901 as Ecole Pratique d'Electricité Industrielle (EPEI). The Ministry of Higher Education and Research designated the institution as a Grandes écoles in 1922. The Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur gave it permission to award the Diplôme d'Ingénieur in 1936. In 1980, the college received its present name. It joined the Conférence des Grandes Écoles in 1989. In 2001, ESIGELEC established the IRSEEM (Institut de Recherche en Systèmes Electroniques Embarqués, or Research Institute for Embedded Electronic Systems). In partnership with research programs, IRSEEM's activity clusters combine their electronics, automation, and computing expertise to develop novel and long-lasting systems integration solutions.
