In France, a student can only stay after graduation if he has a paid job. Students who are already working are typically eligible to apply for a residence permit. This applies to both undergraduate and graduate students.
A non-European graduate student without a job offer may apply for an APS (Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour), which is a temporary residency permit. It is good for a year and is non-renewable while they look for work in France. To do so, they must have a professional Bachelors or Masters degree.
